North Sea Winches were approached by FES to design and manufacture 2 off 185 tonne riser recovery / abandonment winches for an FPU destined to be used in the Gulf of Mexico.

The winches are part of a system developed by FES for a Disconnectable Transfer System (DTS) which provides automatic connections from subsea, ship to ship or moored systems and can be disconnected within 40 seconds in the event of a problem.

The winch design and manufacture was overseen by DNV, which included design approval, material certification, welder approval, surface preparation, coatings and testing.
