Last week saw North Sea Winches deliver a 65Te Dual Drum Constant Tension Lift Winch for cable trenching on the sea bed. The winch is Lloyd design approved and comes as part of a significant uptake in larger winch systems particularly for cable laying vessels. NSW enjoyed working closely with it’s client throughout the project life cycle in order to deliver in line with the technical specification. All manufacturing, testing and painting has been performed in-house.

Listed below is some performance information about this winch system:

  • 65 tonnes (638 kN) lift on 1st layer, at speed up to 20 M/min
  • 10 tonnes (98 kN) lift on 1st layer, at speed up to 100 M/min
  • Assumed load split 55% / 45% between the 2 drums
  • Capacity for 75 metres of 48mm wire rope in 2 layers. Only first layer used when winch is in operation
  • Brakes rated 1.8 x SWL (1148 kN) on 1st layer
  • Structural safety factor 2.7 x SWL on first layer
